4)  The Library Service for the Chinese American community
In an effort to enhance service for the area's Chinese American community, Howard County Library distributed a comprehensive survey several years ago which included a variety of questions; over 300 people responded. One question in particular asked if the community would rather read books in Chinese or English. 81% indicated a preference for Chinese materials and 47% indicated English. If you have visited the Miller Branch recently you know that the Library listened to your opinions as materials in Chinese have increased substantially. What you might not know is that books of interest to the Asian community written in English have also increased and the topics are far-reaching. Just a few of the adult fiction and non-fiction titles include:

  • Musicians from a Different Shore: Asians & Asian Americans in Classical Music - Mari Yoshihara
  • Ancient History of China - Sheila Hollihan-Elliot
  • Balancing Two Worlds: Asian American Students Tell Their Life Stories
  • Authentic Confucius: A Life of Thought and Politics - Ann-ping Chin
  • Asian Cinema: A Field Guide - Tom Vick
  • Chinese Brush Painting: A Hands-On Introduction to the Traditional Art - Caroline Self
  • Red Mandarin Dress - Xiaolong Qiu
  • Orphan of Asia - Zhuoliu Wu

In addition to adult titles, the Children's and Young Adult collections have also been expanded including the following sampling of items:

  • Taiwan - David C. King
  • A Kid's Guide to Asian American History: More Than 70 Activities - Valerie Petrillo
  • The Year of the Rat: A Novel - Grace Lin
  • Yo Yo Ma - Mary Olmstead
  • Nothing But the Truth (and a Few White Lies) - Justin Chen Headley

On a different note, library customers now have access to both downloadable Chinese music, as well as music on compact discs. Some of these titles include:

  • Chinese Masterpieces of the Pipa & Qin
  • From Pekin to Shangaei
  • Cantonese Music - Volumes 1 & 2
  • Art of the Dizi
  • Master of Chinese Percussion
  • Yellow River Piano Concerto

Finally I would like to note that The World Book Encyclopedia in Chinese is owned at both the Central Library and the Miller Branch. I know that a number of customers have already discovered and are using this valuable resource.

If you are interested in checking out any of the above-mentioned materials, please call or visit any Howard County Library location and staff will be happy to help you locate your items of choice.

Thanks for your interest in Howard County Library,
