3)  Hepatitis B is a very widespread disease among the Asian communities.
There was an article in Thursday's New York Times reporting a recent study conducted at NYU that suggested that 1 in 7 East Asians in New York City is a carrier.

Locally, the University of Maryland, the Montgomery County Department of Public Health and the Asian Physician Alliance launched a project in 2005 providing education of Hepatitis B to 7 Asian Communities, blood screening were completed on over 800 participants and the results were published in the Journal of the National Medical Association (JNMA) Vol.99, No.8 August, 2007.  The results of this project demonstrate the disparity in our area and the effectiveness of outreach educational programs in the education of Hepatitis B in the Community.

The Hepatitis project of the Chinese American Community (The Hepatitis project) seeks to address a very important health issue among Asian Americans. Chronic Hepatitis B infection is a silent killer. It is a major cause of liver damage leading to liver cancer that contributes significantly to the early death of many Asians. One out of ten Asians is chronically infected with the Hepatitis B virus, and many do not even know it because there are no symptoms in the early stage. Fortunately, there are now safe and effective vaccines that help to prevent the infection. Several antiviral medications are now approved by the FDA to treat chronically infected patients. Early diagnosis and proper management of hepatitis B save lives and reduced disability.

The Project aims to offer free education on Hepatitis B, discounted blood screening, vaccination and treatments to the Chinese Americans residing in DC metropolitan area. This project is made possible by the sponsorship of the Chinese American Medical Society and the Pan Asian Volunteer Health Clinic. The blood tests for screening and the vaccines are quite expensive. Some insurance companies will not cover such services. The treatment of hepatitis B is very costly. This means that the persons receiving the service will receive a significant potential benefit. The number of people served will be limited only by the availability of resources.

If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Bianca Chang at cchangb@gmail.com. There will be a dinner program planned on May 3.

4)  As important as the Robinson Nature Center is in furthering long-term sustainability in our community, we are also making significant investments in projects that will lead to immediate and direct improvements to our environment.
For instance, our budget contains $200.6 million in projects to maintain and enhance our water and sewer system. These investments will ensure water used in our households is returned clean and pure to our streams, rivers, and ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay. The largest portion of this money will be used to fund a new nitrogen removal system that will dramatically improve our operations at the County's waste water treatment plant. Show your support for the Robinson Nature Center and other environmental priorities by contacting members of the County Council. Support from citizens like you is critical. If you wish to support these capital budget projects by testifying in person, the County Council will be holding public hearings tomorrow evening, Thursday, April 17, at 7:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, May 13, at 11:00 a.m.

5)  Please see the attached press release which shares the exciting news that the County Council has a resolution pending to create a Youth Task Force. The resolution may be found at http://www.howardcountymd.gov/CountyCouncil/CCdocs/CR34-2008.pdf
A public hearing will be held on April 22, 2008 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Banneker Room of the George Howard Building. The press release contains information on how to sign up (which is now done in advance) to testify at http://www.howardcountymd.gov/CountyCouncil/CC_GiveTestimonySignup.asp.  Written testimony is also being accepted at councilmail@howardcountymd.gov
